Villa of the Mosaics of the Tritons on the Appia Antica will be acquired by the Ministry of Culture

The Villa of the Mosaics of the Tritons on theAppia Antica will soon be acquired by the Ministry of Culture: a medieval farmhouse built on the remains of a Roman villa with baths, covering 400 square meters, of which a cistern and mosaics depicting tritons and marine scenes have come down to us. A building located near the Quo Vadis on the Appia Antica, one of the strategic points of the Appia Antica Archaeological Park.

According to Ansa, Minister Franceschini has given the go-ahead for thepre-emptive purchase of the building for an amount of 1.7 million euros. In the letter, signed by the secretary general of the Ministry of Culture Salvo Nastasi and dated March 17, 2021, the General Directorate of Fine Arts and Landscape of the Ministry of Culture is asked to confirm to the directorate of the Appia Antica Archaeological Park the availability of the necessary economic resources in order to exercise the pre-emption on the purchase.

The building had been put up for auction in 2014, with an auction base of more than 5 million euros, but the auction was deserted; previously the ancient farmhouse had been the subject of a lengthy court battle, and an archaeological lien had been placed on it since 1980.

It seems that a part will be used as a reception center and services for visitors.

This is a significant acquisition both because of the value of the archaeological remains and because of the location of the farmhouse: the acquisition of one hectare of land will, in fact, open new connections with the nearby Caffarella Park.
