Vienna: theft of the Secession Palace's golden dome

Thieves, using scaffolding for restoration work, stole gold leaves from the pierced dome of the Vienna Secession Palace.

Is stealing leaves a crime? Sure, if they are gold leaves!

Gold leaves that belonged to the openwork dome of Vienna’s Secession Palace, one of the city’s most famous Art Nouveau buildings.

The famous Viennese palace is undergoing restoration until May; thieves used scaffolding to reach up to the dome and steal some gold-covered leaves worth about 1,000 euros each.

The dome, on which laurel branches and gold-covered leaves intersect, was built in 1898 by architect Joseph Maria Olbrich.

Also inside the precious building is Gustav Klimt’s celebrated Beethoven frieze.
