The Casa dei Tre Oci on the island of Giudecca will be sold to the Berggruen Institute group, a U.S. think tank conceived and chaired by Nicolas Berggruen, who founded the Berggruen Museum in Berlin as well as the 21st Century Council for the Future of Europe. This was announced by the Venice Foundation. The Casa dei Tre Oci will thus become the first European headquarters of the Berggruen Institute. It had been put up for sale in 2020 now the preliminary contract has already been signed.
The note states that "the purchase is aimed at the realization of a project of international cultural stature entirely consistent with the institutional purposes of the Venice Foundation and with the historical, cultural and architectural value of the mansion. In fact, the agreement reached with the Venice Foundation envisages that the Casa dei Tre Oci will host the first European headquarters of the Berggruen Institute, dedicated to the organization of symposia, summits, workshops and conferences designed to host guests, scholars and policy makers of international caliber. The property will, likewise, be used for the organization and sponsorship of exhibitions related to photography, art and architecture, including in co-operation with major international museums and institutions such as the Berggruen Museum, the Tate, the J. Paul Getty Trust, MOMA, LACMA, the Asia Society, and the Fondation Beyeler."
The project will make it possible to maintain and increase the key role of the mansion on the island of Giudecca, ensuring the enhancement of the restoration work carried out by the Venice Foundation. In addition, the agreement allows the Foundation to use the building for an additional two years to carry out cultural initiatives to be carried out also in collaboration with the Berggruen Institute, in continuity with the purposes of cultural and artistic promotion shared between the two entities.
“With this act we confirm the Foundation’s firm determination to preserve the value and culturally strategic role of this unique mansion in the world,” said Fondazione di Venezia President Michele Bugliesi. “Thanks to the collaboration between our Foundation and the Berggruen Institute, over the next two years and beyond, the Casa dei Tre Oci will continue to be a hub of constructive artistic and cultural debate of international stature. I would like to thank Nicolas Berggruen, president of the Berggruen Institute, for the consonance of views that has accompanied the interlocution of these months and for his capacity for vision towards the city of Venice. We entrust the Casa dei Tre Oci to a prestigious institution, and to a person of great depth: I am certain that this act will be the beginning of a new and fruitful collaboration also with all the city’s institutions, through which to place Venice and its community at the center of every interest and action.”
