During the restoration of Titian ’sAssumption in the Basilica dei Frari, which lasted four years and was entirely financed by Save Venice, the altarpiece and marble frame had been covered by a large PVC tarpaulin that stretched more than fifty square meters and reproduced faithful copies of the masterpiece, hiding the scaffolding needed for the restoration work.
Now that tarpaulin has been entrusted to the hands of inmates of Venice ’s Santa Maria Maggiore prison, who have transformed it into one hundred shopper bags for a sustainability and inclusion project, with the support of the Rio Terà dei Pensieri social cooperative. Each shopper carries a piece of the large painting or its frame and each is a unique piece. The bags are on sale inside the Basilica dei Frari at a price ranging from 40 to 60 euros depending on the motif in the print.
The project is a concrete example of upcycling, or creative reuse that transforms discarded materials into new objects, made according to principles of sustainability. proceeds from the sale will help finance the costs of annual maintenance work on the Titian altarpiece. And the making of the shoppers helped support the work of Venetian prison inmates who produced them as part of a larger social inclusiveness project.
