The Vasari Corridor in Florence was defaced again: new images of graffiti artists and writers appeared on the columns of Giorgio Vasari ’s famous architecture on the night between June 23 and 24. This time, however, the “interventions” included an image that features the stylistic traits typical of the works of street artist Blub, famous for his reproductions of famous works of art “submerged” underwater. In this case it is a self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh equipped with the classic diving mask, Blub’s “trademark,” which moreover these days is the protagonist of his first solo exhibition, entitled L’arte sa nuotare, at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
It is difficult to think that it is the artist, since the most skilled street artists usually have respect for historical places such as the Vasari Corridor: more likely, therefore, that it is a replica performed by a fan, or a work done by a simple imitator. Not least because the underwater van Gogh is certainly not an original work: Blub had already executed it in Amsterdam.
In doubt, and above all by virtue of the fact that in Italy it is not possible under any circumstances to “modify” by one’s own intervention the appearance of a listed property, the Uffizi has already removed everything that appeared overnight. “The constant soiling of our architectural and monumental heritage prompted us to change tactics last year,” explained Uffizi Galleries Director Eike Schmidt. “Now we have a new approach, ’Clean Now,’ which is working very well. Everyone needs to know that for these exhibitionist and disfiguring gestures they are also criminally liable.”
