In Paris, during an auction at Drouot ’s held yesterday afternoon, the Vincent van Gogh Foundation purchased a letter written by the artist himself together with Paul Gauguin. The letter dates from 1888 and in it the two artists recount their stay in the Yellow House in Arles to their mutual friend and artist Emile Bernard. It is theonly letter that van Gogh wrote together with another artist, which is why the museum believes that the letter is the most important document written by van Gogh that still belonged to a private individual. It is a great testimony to the artistic collaboration between van Gogh and Gauguin: a true dialogue between the two about the first impressions of their collaboration, and their different tones add psychological depth to the letter.
Satisfied Van Gogh Museum director Emilie Gordenker: “We are delighted and very grateful that the Vincent van Gogh Foundation made it possible to purchase such a significant letter for our collection. The museum would not be born or would not exist today without the Vincent van Gogh Foundation. It is once again thanks to the Foundation that we can add an important new object to the museum’s collection. We always work closely with the Foundation and we are thrilled that, thanks to this acquisition, this important letter can be included in our fall exhibition that will focus on van Gogh’s letters.”
The latter is scheduled for October 2020.
