Valencia has been named World Design Capital 2022

The World Design Organization has named the city of Valencia World Design Capital 2022.

Valencia has been elected World Design Capital 2022 by the World Design Organization (WDO).

The WDO extolled the precision, rigor and professionalism of its candidacy and the cohesion of the sector’s strength.

The maturity of Valencian design is visible in leisure, architecture, culture, and gastronomy. Current projects are numerous: the Valencian Design Archive, the future Design District, the Arena Valencia project, a large multipurpose space for sports events, the new stadium, the Wind Tower in the Valencia Marina, designed by architect Fran Silvestre, and the future Caixaforum Valencia, in the Agora (City of Arts and Sciences).

In addition to Calatrava ’s works (L’Hemisfèric, the Science Museum, the Oceanogràfic, the Palace of the Arts, and the Agora), architecturally Valencia offers a wide variety of buildings, which belong to Valencian modernism, such as the Central Market and the Mercato de Colón, both with more than a hundred years of history. Special mention to Valencia’s Lonja de la Seda, an example of civil Gothic that was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

The nomination will feature a series of events including industrial design, interior design, architecture, service design and interfaces: each month, from January to December, a theme will be addressed through exhibitions, congresses, seminars and conferences. Highlights include design against climate change, Mediterranean design, storytelling from design, design’s commitment to gender equality, design history, industrial development, and design and nature.
