UNESCO is launching a program to support Ukrainian women artists who have been forced to flee their country due to war, in partnership with the NGO Artists at Risk. The program will allow them and their children to be hosted and cared for by acultural institution in the country where they have found refuge.
The women artists will be supported for a minimum of three months by a cultural institution in the host country. They will be cared for with their children in art residencies, and will benefit from support in terms of networking, visibility and devising new cultural projects. The program aims to empower them to become autonomous by the end of their hosting period, whether they later choose to return to live in Ukraine or decide to settle permanently in the host country.
UNESCO has already allocated $140,000 to fund the program, which is expected to initially benefit about thirty women artists.
“The war has driven millions of Ukrainians into exile, the vast majority of whom are women and children,” said UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay. “Among these people, women artists who have been forced to suspend their creative activities often lack material and financial resources to resume their work in the host country.”
