The U.K. Home Office has denied visas to three Egyptians-a decision under the banner of consistency if the three Egyptians are three curators and if the purpose of their visa is to participate in a conference titled"Breaking Down Barriers" to be held in the city of Swansea in Wales from Sept. 4-7, 2018.
Reason for the rejection, according to the ministry, would be the inability to verify the letter of concession written by theInternational Council of Museums (ICOM) contained in the curators’ visa application. The resources made available to them should have covered flights, accommodation and living expenses during their stay.
One of the three scholars, Abdelrahman Othman, an award-winning curator at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and founder of My Museum in Your Classroom, a project supported by Microsoft, worked at the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities. When confronted with the rejection, he was very surprised, as he has never had difficulty attending international conferences held in the United States, China, Germany, and Japan.
Carolyn Graves-Brown, curator of the Egyptian Center in Swansea, said, “One can hardly hold a conference on Egyptology museums without the participation of Egyptian colleagues. Imagine my embarrassment and dismay when these young Egyptians were denied visas. We talk about welcoming, helping young professionals, and then they are denied visas...”
