The Egyptian Museum of Turin has made 238 papyri from its collection visible online on a special platform: 218 hieratic manuscripts, 10 papyri with cursive hieroglyphics, and 10 documents in Demotic Greek.
An online database where images of papyri kept in the Egyptian museum’s repositories can be viewed; the number of papyri and documents included in the database will be continuously updated. Currently only a selection of the collection is available on the site, while registered users will have access to the entire collection of hieratic papyri from the Ramesside period, except for the smallest fragments.
The platform is designed both for insiders and for anyone wishing to search for information about the papyri and includes, for this very reason, narrative content for non-specialists and historical focus.
At the moment the site is in English, but translations into many languages of the texts written on the papyri are included; an Italian version of the site will also be available soon.
In total, the papyrus collection housed in the Egyptian Museum of Turin includes about 700 whole manuscripts and about 17,000 fragments, evidence of more than 3,000 years of written culture.
Great satisfaction for Turin Payrus Online Platform from the museum director, Christian Greco.
