Mario Merz ’s installation that has illuminated the dome of the Mole Antonelliana in Turin during Luci d’Artista since 2000 will remain lit all year round, from dusk until midnight in winter and until 1 p.m. in summer.
"The Flight of Numbers" represents the mathematician Fibonacci’s series of numbers: each number is the sum of the previous two.
The decision to light the installation every day of the year was made by the city administration of Turin, which said, “The artist Mario Merz has repeatedly used the Fibonacci series as an element of his installations, likewise, he was among the first to take fluorescent light as a metaphor for energy. Here, however, the numerical succession takes on new meanings both as a strong light signal arranged on the Mole and in relation to the curve, another frequently used mathematical pattern, of the dome of Antonelli’s building. The work, lighting up every evening, will become one with the city’s symbolic monument.”
