This morning the people of Turin awoke to an unusual presence in Piazza San Carlo, Turin’s living room: a huge white inscription, “I still love you,” traced on the pavement of the square in the center of the city. The writing, in block letters made of chalk (thus a material that does not cause damage), occupies almost the entire square arranging itself around the equestrian monument to Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy. It can be seen well only from above and was reportedly made at night (some witnesses report seeing some boys in activity before 7 a.m. this morning).
From the superintendent’s office they seem to know nothing about it: “In theory, any work involving a listed place should be authorized; but freedom of expression exists and plaster does no harm,” said superintendent Luisa Papotti. “I didn’t know anything about it; no request for authorization came to us. It would be interesting to better understand the reasons; from my point of view, it is interesting that public space is interpreted as a space where ideas, thoughts or hopes can be expressed and not just mounted stands.”
However, rumors about the authors of the gesture are chasing each other in the local press: it would be an initiative of the musical group Eugenio in via di Gioia, linked to the end of the health emergency (as is known, the state of emergency will in fact end on March 31). Also according to local newspapers, a flash mob would be planned this afternoon, also led by the Turin band, after which the writing would be erased by Amiat, Turin’s public hygiene company, at the expense of Eugenio in via di Gioia who, Torino Today reports, would have already booked the service. The Eugenio in via di Gioia however for now do not confirm the rumors. In any case, a particularly successful guerrilla marketing action, since everyone is talking about it today....
