Turin: Chapel of the Shroud reopens to public after lengthy restoration

The official reopening date of the Shroud Chapel in Turin after a long restoration is September 27, 2018.

The Chapel of the Shroud in Turin, a Baroque masterpiece by Guarino Guarini completed in the late 17th century, is once again open to the public.

The official reopening date is September 27, 2018, when a ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. at the Teatro Regio in the presence of Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities Alberto Bonisoli.

The chapel underwent extensive restoration following a fire, which had compromised the entire structure, in 1997. Seven years earlier, in 1990, the chapel had already been closed due to the collapse of a marble fragment from an interior cornice.

The restoration was funded by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities with support from Compagnia di San Paolo, Fondazione La Stampa - Specchio dei Tempi, Consulta per la Valorizzazione dei Beni Artistici e Culturali di Torino, Iren and Performance in Lightning.

There is one new feature: the Chapel of the Shroud will be part of the Royal Museums of Turin’s tour route, sandwiched between the Royal Palace and the Sabauda Gallery, but it will no longer hold the Holy Shroud.

On the occasion of the reopening, from Friday, Sept. 28 to Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, access to the chapel will have the special cost of 3 euros; from Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, admission will be included in the Royal Museums ticket.
