The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region supports Trieste’s candidacy as UNESCO City of Literature with the establishment of two literary prizes: the Umberto Saba Poetry Prize and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Literary Prize “The Tale of Places and Time.”
At the presentation of the two literary initiatives, the regional councillor for Culture emphasized how the Region, in addition to continuing to support Trieste’s candidacy and the growth of Pordenonelegge, sees the Friuli Venezia Giulia Literary Prize "The Tale of Places and Time," awarded for the first edition to historian and writer Valerio Massimo Manfredi, both as a tool for cultural promotion and as an initiative to enhance knowledge of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
In summary, the message launched is as follows: Works set in our region make it possible to make its historical, social, cultural and naturalistic beauties and typicalities known to a very wide audience, thus triggering a virtuous territorial promotion. An example of this is Trieste, which, in addition to having been the birthplace and chosen as the residence of such literary greats as Svevo, Saba, Joyce, D’Annunzio, Magris and Pahor, has been able to shape its own characteristic as a literary city by placing in the streets and squares representations of these authors integrated into its urban and social fabric. A characteristic that shows how deeply these characters and their works are linked to the history of the regional capital and confirms the validity of Trieste’s candidacy as a Unesco City of Literature, which finds in the Umberto Saba Poetry Prize and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Literary Prize “The Tale of Places and Time” further elements in its support.
The Friuli Venezia Giulia Literary Prize “The Tale of Places and Time” was established in 2020 by the Region together with the Pordenonelegge Foundation to enhance, through the narration of a major writer, a place in Friuli Venezia Giulia and its history. Through this award, which includes a series entitled Compendi and edited by Italo Svevo, a map of authoritative narrative works will be composed, which well reflects the definition given by Ippolito Nievo that “Friuli is a small compendium of the universe.”
The Umberto Saba Poetry Prize, which kicks off in Trieste at the behest of the Region and the Municipality in collaboration with Fondazione Pordenonelegge, is dedicated to Italian poetry published in volume, will be held annually, and will be awarded for its first edition in March 2021.
The first stage of the Umberto Saba Poetry Prize will be held on Wednesday, September 9, at 6 and 8:45 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Revoltella Museum in Trieste, with two meetings coordinated by Gian Mario Villalta to retrace the legacy of Umberto Saba’s poetry, together with Claudio Grisancich, in dialectical relationship with the city. Immediately afterwards, at 8:45 p.m. at Museo Revoltella, with the participation of poets Franca Mancinelli, Roberto Galaverni and Antonio Riccardi, the current dimension of poetry and its forms will be explored, along with the nature and approach of poetry-making. The meetings are freely accessible to the public.
