At Torrechiara Castle, among the castles of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza, restoration work on the Loggia of the Camera d’Oro (Golden Chamber ) was recently completed, which allowed for the pictorial retouching of the decorated and stone surfaces and with consolidation work also on the sandstone columns of the Cortile d’Onore.
During the work, paintings showing interesting battle scenes came back to light, and some architectural elements of the Cortile d’Onore, column bases and sandstone capitals, which were more critical with risks to the safety of visitors, were also secured.
“The work, which lasted 30 days,” comments Torrechiara Castle director Carolina Tenti, “ensured the consolidation of the frescoes, whose legibility had been considerably compromised by a previous restoration that had concealed some parts of them and whose materials were unsuitable for conservation conditions in an outdoor environment.”
“This work site,” continues Director Tenti, “concludes a phase of work on the loggias of the Castle that began in 2022 and that involved the loggia of the Cortile d’Onore and is in addition to the many complex worksites that have affected the Castle in the year just ended and that have seen the construction of the new special and security systems, thefire-fighting system to obtain the Fire Prevention Certificate, extraordinary work on the Castle’s vegetation, and the new graphic design of the museum to improve museum enjoyment and communication in addition to the new online ticketing activated through the Musei Italiani app and implemented thanks to the National Museum System. In 2024, other major interventions are planned for the restoration of the frescoes of the celebrated Camera D’Oro and for the maintenance of the Castle’s roofs.”
The work, which was started and completed in a very short time to anticipate the winter frost, was carried out under the careful guidance of the director of works, Dr. Elena Arlotti of the Emilia-Romagna Regional Museums Directorate, and restorers Beatrice Barbagallo, Sonia Garbazza and Anna Maria Tosini. The loggia will be open to visitors as every year starting next spring during the Castle’s usual opening hours.
