Three important paintings, by Annibale Carracci, Antoon van Dyck and Salvator Rosa, were stolen from the Christ Church Picture Gallery in Oxford, England.

Asensational theft at one ofEngland’s most important museums, the Christ Church Picture Gallery in Oxford: three precious masterpieces by Annibale Carracci (the celebrated Young Man Drinking, circa 1580), Antoon van Dyck ( Soldier on Horseback, circa 1616) and Salvator Rosa(Coastal Landscape with Soldiers, from the 1640s) have disappeared. According to the police in the Thames Valley, a region west of London whose main center is precisely Oxford, the theft occurred on Saturday night (around 11 p.m.).

Thames Valley Police Chief Inspector Jon Capps said that “the works have not yet been found but investigations are underway to find them and bring the perpetrators of the theft to justice. Police presence in the area will be increased, and in the meantime the authorities and our staff will continue the search.” Capps then appealed to the public in case anyone saw suspicious movements in the area on the night of the theft.

The Christ Church Picture Gallery is the picture gallery at Christ Church, one of Oxford University’s colleges. The institution merely issued a statement reiterating the police appeal for witnesses, and said it was grateful for the authorities’ prompt response. As a precaution, the museum has been closed until further notice.
