The Château de Montsoreau is one of the most beautiful of the Castles of the Loire, the system of 300 manors, fortresses and residences located along the Loire Valley and declared a World Heritage Site since 2000: that of Montsoreau, built starting in 1450, is one of the most famous also because it featured in books by Alexandre Dumas(The Lady of Monsoreau), Gustave Flaubert(Par les champs et par les grèves), by François Rabelais (Gargantua and Pantagruel), as well as numerous works of art by great masters (famous is a watercolor by William Turner kept in the Ashmolean Museum). Today, however, it is home to a contemporary art museum, which, while waiting to open its halls to its visitors again, as of May 11 offers something new to all visitors.
In fact, the Montsoreau Castle Museum of Contemporary Art has invented Muséodrive, a highly original sales system adapted to the rules imposed by what the French call déconfinement, or the exit from the most restrictive phase of the measures to contain the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. It involves a service of... take-away exhibitions: a real take-away sales service is set up in front of the museum’s ticket office that allows the purchase of an exhibition kit to be installed at home.
The kit for the exhibition Home from Home, a contemporary art show envisioned by conceptual artist collective Art & Language and made all from works in the permanent collection of the Château de Montsoreau - Museum of Contemporary Art, contains seven artworks to be assembled according to the instructions provided. Anyone with a pair of scissors and a tube of glue can set up the exhibition in their own home, turning their house or apartment into a museum, and its inhabitants into organizers.
The Muséodrive allows visitors, for the price of a museum entrance fee (€10.50), to pick up an exhibition kit at the building’s entrance, all without getting out of their vehicle: in fact, the mechanism is that of a take-away service in a car. “This context of deconfinement,” says Marie-Caroline Chaudruc, vice president of the institution, “creates a demand, it is our duty to respond to it. This is by no means a foregone conclusion; this exhibition kit allows the public to get involved in issues that are usually reserved for professionals.”
Those who would like more information can visit the Château de Montsoreau website. In fact, for those who cannot physically travel to France, the take-away exhibit can also be downloaded online!
