They wanted to leave a mark of their presence in the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and thought it best to do so by carving their names on the monument’s precious marbles: the vacation of two tourists (two brothers aged 38 and 35, both doctors) thus ended up at the local Carabinieri barracks. According to the reconstructions of the military of the Arma, the two tourists, having arrived at the top floor of the tower, engraved with a coin the name (or nickname) of one of the two (“Jeffy”) on a black marble in the inner walkway, and not satisfied with that they took a selfie. Another tourist, noticing the defacement, alerted the security guard: one of the attendants therefore handed the two brothers over to the Carabinieri.
The tourists, when the military arrived, justified themselves by saying that they did not think it was so serious because they had noticed the presence of other inscriptions on the Tower’s marbles. Obviously, the justification was of little use as similar actions, in 2019 Italy, constitute a crime: the two were therefore arrested on charges of aggravated damage, and were later released as the prosecutor on duty, Egidio Celano, considered, following interrogation, that there were no further needs for remand in custody. Now the two will still have to answer for their crime before the courts.
