Performing arts venues are a model of effectiveness in the fight against Covid-19 contagion. The culture aldermen of Italy’s ten largest cities affirmed this: Luca Bergamo, Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Cultural Growth in Rome; Filippo Del Corno, Councillor for Culture in Milan; Eleonora de Majo, Councillor for Culture and Tourism in Naples; Barbara Grosso, Councillor for Cultural Policies, Education, and Youth in Genoa; Francesca Paola Leon, Councillor for Culture in Turin; Matteo Lepore, Councillor for Culture and Tourism of Bologna; Paola Mar, Councillor for Heritage, Toponymy, Promotion of the City and University of Venice; Paolo Marasca, Councillor for Culture of Ancona; Ines Pierucci, Councillor for Cultural and Tourism Policies of Bari; Paola Piroddi, Councillor for Culture of Cagliari; and Tommaso Sacchi, Councillor for Culture of Florence.
“Theaters, auditoriums, cinemas,” the ten aldermen write in a joint note, “represent today a model of effectiveness in the application of measures to contain the COVID-19 epidemic. The rigor with which the entertainment industry complies with medical and health indications guarantees maximum safety for workers in the sector and the public, as shown by the statistical data collected by AGIS.” In short, a model to be taken as an example, since, so far, no contagions are recorded in performing arts venues (and, more generally, in cultural venues, such as museums. “We are therefore very satisfied,” the assessors continue, “with the measures taken in the latest DPCM, which have made subject to regional ordinances that modulate with criteria of proportionality the quota of spectators on the basis of the actual capacity and size of the performance halls, thus accepting the appeal we made last week.”
“We hope,” the aldermen conclude, “that this effort to protect a sector that has shown such a great sense of responsibility in recent months will be shared and supported by the regional presidents themselves, maintaining the derogations in force or introducing new ones, without implementing measures of a restrictive nature. Caution and trust are key ingredients to contain the contagion and at the same time regain a new dimension of normality, where the social rapprochement generated by culture strengthens the bond of community despite the necessary physical distancing.”
