The world of tourism launches a Manifesto. We call for help, the sector and the entire Italian economy are at risk

Restarting with tourism and organizing for when people will be able to travel again, once the health emergency over the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic is over. A group of tour operators, travel agencies and event organizers has launched the Manifesto for Italian Tourism: it is an appeal to institutions to save tourism (which generates 13 percent of the Gross Domestic Product and is therefore one of the economic pillars of the country). In fact, the emergency has caused a serious crisis for tourism, and if all the businesses in the sector cannot access immediate support, the risk, the Manifesto’s drafters fear, is a chain collapse with very heavy impacts on the economy, direct employment, and allied industries.

Several are the Manifesto’s demands. The first: protect Italy’s heritage, both historical and cultural, landscape and food and wine. The second: to support businesses in the sector, which operate in catering, culture, entertainment, transportation, tour guide services, to name but a few, and are worth more than 232 billion euros. The third is to restart quality tourism. “Businesses in the sector,” the text reads, "want to take on the task and responsibility of protecting travel to and from Italy, enhancing the tourism supply chain, to contribute to the revitalization of the country, making sure that people travel in maximum safety, and helping companies in all sectors to operate and make themselves known in the world. The fourth: to act immediately with immediate measures to help because “the total blockage of activity could last for several months and the recovery will be slow and long, without considering the enormous costs incurred to date” (the sector may not survive in the coming months, causing a knock-on effect on employment and therefore on the Italian economy). The fifth: the establishment of an extraordinary fund to support lost income for all companies in the sector.

The Manifesto (a petition has been launched that can be joined through the “Ripartiamo dall’Italia” website or directly on Change. org) is an initiative of the associations ASTOI Confindustria Viaggi (which represents 90 percent of tour operating in Italy), FTO (which brings together the world of tourism distribution with networks and independent agencies and other segments of the industry) and, of important operators in the sector: Alpitour World, Gattinoni Group, Robintur Travel Group, Alidays, Bluserena, Futura Vacanze, Giver Viaggi e Crociere, Idee per Viaggiare, Viaggi Del Mappamondo, Naar, Nicolaus-Valtur, Ota Viaggi, TH Resorts, Trinity Viaggi Studio, Uvet, Veratour.
