After seventeen years of observation on the Leaning Tower of Pisa, experts from the Surveillance Group of the world-famous Pisan monument (whose members are Professors Salvatore Settis, Carlo Viggiani and Donato Sabia) have found that the Tower is stable and very slowly its slope is reducing.
After the consolidation and restoration work designed and carried out by the International Committee coordinated by Professor Michele Jamiolkowski between 1993 and 2001, theOpera della Primaziale Pisana, in agreement with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, deemed it essential to establish a Supervisory Group, first formed by Salvatore Settis, Carlo Viggiani and Luca Sampaolesi, then with Donato Sabia of the Turin Polytechnic replacing Sampaolesi. The Group meets in Pisa about every three months.
The activities of the Surveillance Group, supported financially and administratively by the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, have consisted ofanalyzing the movements of the Tower, improving the quality of the measurements taken, managing and expanding the monitoring system, and promoting studies and research oriented toward a greater understanding of the static and dynamic behavior of the Pisa bell tower.
The slope of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is shrinking. This was found by a team of experts after years of analysis |
