Opening its doors to visitors, effectively entering the San Rossore Park’s tour circuit, is the Villa del Gombo, the former residence of the President of the Republic commissioned by Giovanni Gronchi.
The villa was built in the late 1950s, when the San Rossore estate was annexed to the property of the Head of State, by Amedeo Luccichenti and Vincenzo Monaco. It is one of the most significant works of modern architecture found in Tuscany because of its stilted structure, ring shape, position in the natural setting and attention to detail. The Villa covers about 640 square meters and is raised from the ground thanks to four steel supports: the compact volume is lightened by large glass surfaces that delimit, in the center of the plan, a square-shaped courtyard.
It constitutes an example of antelitteram bioarchitecture, in the wake of Frank Lloyd Wright’s achievements, and is characterized by four concentric environments: the courtyard, the seamless corridor, the rooms and the terrace. Huge doors-persianes fold open to their full width making the facades airy in the alternation of glass and wood. Renovated, it has air conditioning and photovoltaic systems, fiber optics and wi-fi, a professional kitchen, a conference room, and inside there is an exhibition of period photos featuring Presidents and buildings in San Rossore.
The first appointments to visit it are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15, departing from the Park Visitor Center at 4 p.m. Reservations required by calling 050-530101 Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Full ticket 22 euros, 11 euros for children between 6 and 12 years old; free for children under 5.
“The former residence of the President of the Republic wanted by Giovanni Gronchi, recently restored, in recent years has already hosted conferences, extraordinary guided tours and numerous events, such as the appointments of the ViviParco review,” explains Park President Lorenzo Bani. “Now thanks to the collaboration with the Visitor Center it enters to all intents and purposes in the circuit of the Park’s visits, increasing the opportunities to discover its truly unique features, giving all citizens the opportunity to see it.”
