Themed Entertainmente Association published a few days ago, in collaboration with AECOM, the TEA/AECOM Theme Index and Museum Index report, an annual study of the number of visitors to theme parks, water parks, and museums worldwide. The interesting fact is that according to the TEA/AECOM report, the most visited museum in the world in 2016 would not be the Louvre, as claimed instead by The Art Newspaper’s rankings: in particular, the top spot would be held by the National Museum of China in Beijing, followed by the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, while only the Louvre would be on the third step of the podium (confirmed, however, by a drop of more than one million visitors: it is the worst figure of the top twenty museums). There are no Italian museums in the TEA-AECOM rankings: there are, however, the Vatican Museums in ninth place. The report also released rankings on a continental basis: in Europe, the only Italian museum featured is the Uffizi Gallery, which ranks 19th, behind the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and ahead of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
TEA-AECOM’s Museum Index reaches its fifth edition this year. “Museums,” the report says, “have gone through a decade of historic change, and further changes are expected. The impact of the recession, technology trends, market changes and government funding cuts have all had an effect. Museums, more hesitant to rely on funds from donations after the recession, must again think about developing sources of income. They must also reexamine the visitor experience to reach younger and more diverse audiences, to respond to changing demographics within their communities, and to continue to meet the needs of educators, which are also changing.” Here are the World Top 10:
