From June 14, 2018, the Palace of the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg will exhibit the marble Hermes-Portrait of Pseudo-Seneca from the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. In addition, theHermes of Socrates, on loan since February 2017, will return to Italy at the MANN in Naples.
Both loans are part of the OBVIA project for a dialogue between the treasures of the MANN and the member states of the European Union and for the promotion of the Museum’s image nationally and internationally: a project implemented by director Paolo Giulierini and coordinated by Dr. Daniela Savy of the University of Naples Federico II.
The Herma-portrait of Pseudo Seneca is a replica of a late Hellenistic Greek bronze prototype: it was presumably part of the furnishings of a sumptuous Roman villa in the area of ancient Stabiae.
The marble work has the head leaning forward and slightly tilted toward the right shoulder, the face wrinkled with wrinkles, the eyes sunken in, the mouth disclosed in an expression of concentration, and the beard irregularly covering the face.
