The frescoes in Savona ’s Crocetta Chapel are in a disastrous state.

These were painted by Bartolomeo Guidobono and Gio Enrico Haffner at the end of the 17th century and depict scenes of the procession of faithful visiting the shrine, where in 1536 the apparition of Our Lady of Mercy to Antonio Botta allegedly occurred ; today they appear crumbled, washed out.

In order to understand the reasons for today’s state, an investigation was launched and an inspection by the Carabinieri of the cultural heritage protection unit was carried out.

Among the hypotheses put forward were neglect of conservation, an intervention on the external structure that would have caused moisture inside or, another hypothesis, the cleaning company may have damaged the frescoes and removed material from the floor.

The damaged part would concern the three sides of the octagon of which the Chapel is composed. Restoration work had already been planned, but the situation has worsened considerably.
