The Emilia-Romagna region has decided to buy works of art to support the sector

The Emilia-Romagna Region invests 178,200 euros to purchase contemporary artworks: a help to the sector affected by the crisis caused by Covid-19.

178,200 euros for contemporary art purchases: the Emilia Romagna region is the first public body to launch a program of artwork acquisitions with the specific aim of helping the sector affected by the health emergency. More in detail, there will be 36 prize-purchases worth 4,950 euros each, which will be awarded by a jury of experts for works of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and video art, with three-quarters of the acquisitions to be reserved for artists under 40 (one can apply from October 19 to November 3, 2020).

The jury of experts consists of Gloria Bartoli, deputy artistic director of Arte Fiera (the modern and contemporary art fair in Bologna), Walter Guadagnini, professor of contemporary art history and photography at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna, and Marco Pierini, director of the Galleria Nazionale dellUmbria. The prize-purchases may be awarded to artists working in Emilia-Romagna, Italians or citizens of a European Union country. By “working in the region,” we mean artists who have their professional studio in Emilia-Romagna as of the date of publication of the call for applications or, alternatively, who were born or artistically trained in Emilia-Romagna, with an active presence in the regional artistic context through commissions obtained or presence in exhibitions at museums, galleries, foundations and darte associations in the regional territory. Applications must be received at servcult@postacert.regione.emilia-romagna.it between 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, and 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3. The selection will be made on the basis of the artist’s CV and the works submitted (the call for applications has already been published on the region’s website, the website of the Cultural Heritage Institute and the websites of other regional bodies.

“The Emilia-Romagna region, also in order to cope with the emergency caused by the Covid 19 epidemic,” said Culture Councillor Mauro Felicori, “intends to support, among others, the visual arts sector, which has been particularly affected due to the temporary closure of darte galleries and the suspension and cancellation of national and international darte fairs and exhibitions. In particular, we turn lattention to young artists working in the region. These acquisitions will increase a collection of darte works, owned by the Emilia-Romagna Region, formed in previous decades. The Region will ensure their usability, making them available through digitization, with exhibitions in spaces open to the public in its own premises, through events or even with a possible concession to other public institutions, which guarantee similar ways of use. This measure enriches a set of measures already taken in favor of the region’s artists: Viralissima, concerts for the Invisibles, funding for twelve theater and dance productions, and extraordinary support for audiovisual productions; which will be completed with grants to creative enterprises soon to be allocated.”
