A video recounts the long and complex restoration of one of the Urbino artist’s most enigmatic portraits kept at the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino: the restoration was carried out in 2014 and the painting returned to its original location a year later.

The different sequences of the diagnostic interventions, starting with the X-ray that highlighted the extent of attacks on the wooden support by xylophagous insects and ending with the disinfestation of the painting and its pictorial integration, are carefully illustrated by the restorers, who also reveal the many discoveries made possible by the analyses: from the various signs of repentance in the underlying drawing to the use of bone black and copper pigments. Many elements emerged from a restoration that restored light and splendor to the work.



Through this special video, the MiBACT shows not only what is usually accessible to the public, but also the behind-the-scenes of cultural heritage with the many professionals involved in conservation, preservation and enhancement.
