It seems unbelievable, but in the Italy of 2019 there seems to be a possibility of a museum director working for free. We are in Senigallia (Ancona), where the municipality has just announced a competition to fill the position of director of MUSINF, the Municipal Museum of Modern Art, Information and Photography. The director will need to have a degree in cultural heritage economics or similar subjects, and will have duties of high responsibility since he or she will have to promote and enhance the “Senigallia city of photography” project, define a project for the museum’s economic sustainability, find possible funding channels, collaborate on activities of monitoring and evaluation of activities and services with particular reference to data on visitor attendance, identify strategies for finding the economic resources necessary for the enhancement of the collections, collaborate with the municipal manager in charge of human resources to find measures to achieve maximum efficiency in service delivery.
The appointment will be for three years and, the contract outline states, “will be carried out free of charge and without providing for any compensation to be paid by the municipality.” Not only that, the director will be reimbursed for expenses only if “strictly related to the performance of the assignment” and only “if previously authorized by the competent manager and only upon production of the relevant accounting statement.” The assignment is identified as a “relationship of coordinated professional collaboration with the Municipality and does not constitute either formally or substantively a subordinate employment relationship with the Municipality of Senigallia.” It is specified, however, that the new director’s services may be performed “within an office to be obtained” within the museum’s headquarters. Too much grace.
