TheArena of Verona, one of the most important and ancient Italian monuments and one of the very rare Roman amphitheaters still intact and in use, is in a state of serious conservation distress. Taking stock of the situation of the amphitheater, which dates back to the first century A.D. and is attended each year by 1.5 million people (eight hundred thousand of whom are tourists and seven hundred thousand spectators at concerts and opera festivals), is superintendent Fabrizio Magani, who expressed his concern at a public meeting held in Verona.
“The situation is not comforting,” Magani said. “The place is in serious distress both from the point of view of preservation, and of plant engineering, which is a form of protection for the monument, but above all for the people, who are many, who as we know transit there.” There is also “the question of compatibility of use, that is, of proper management that passes not so much by the artistic dimension, that is, the variety of artistic performances, but by the quality of the facilities that accompany the various concerts.” Mitigating the situation will soon be a conservative project worth 14 million euros, which will be supported by UniCredit and Fondazione Cariverona. However, for Magani, it will still be necessary to find the right balance between the conservation aspect and the Arena’s uses.
