On Tuesday, January 10 at 11:30 a.m. , the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding for the candidacy of the site"Via Appia. Regina viarum" for the inscription of the Via Appia on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The project, promoted by the Ministry of Culture through central and peripheral offices, involves four regions (Lazio, Campania, Basilicata and Puglia), twelve provinces and metropolitan cities, seventy-three municipalities, fifteen parks, the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology and twenty-five Italian and foreign universities.
The consular road, about 900 km of route from Rome to Brindisi including the Trajan variant, constitutes not only the prototype of the Roman road system, but is also a millenary symbol of the relations between the Mediterranean civilizations and those of the East and Africa.
To support the candidacy of the Appian Way, the Ministry of Culture is investing in the restoration and enhancement of archaeological and architectural evidence located along the route, with the aim of combining the reasons for the preservation and enhancement of this heritage with the sustainable development of the territories involved, in order to strengthen the cultural offer, which is fundamental for the social and economic growth especially of inland areas.
The ceremony will be attended by: the Undersecretary of State for MiC, Giancarlo Mazzi; the President of the Pontifical Commission of Sacred Archaeology, Monsignor Pasquale Iacobone; the President of the Puglia Region, Michele Emiliano; the President of the Basilicata Region, Vito Bardi; the Deputy President of the Lazio Region, Daniele Leodori; the Councillor for Tourism of the Campania Regional Council, Felice Casucci; and the Councillor for Culture of Roma Capitale, Miguel Gotor.
The speeches will be introduced by the director of the UNESCO office of the Ministry of Culture, Mariassunta Peci, the scientific coordinator of the candidacy, Angela Maria Ferroni, and greetings from the director of the National Roman Museum, Stéphane Verger.
After evaluation by the Governing Council of the Italian National UNESCO Commission, the scientific dossier, accompanied by the Management Plan for the candidate site, will be sent to Paris.
