The 2021 Venice Biennale is postponed to 2022. Also postponed is the Architecture Biennale

One-year postponement for Biennale Arte and Biennale Architettura, postponed to 2022 and 2021, respectively, due to coronavirus.

The 59th edition of the Venice Art Biennale, which was supposed to take place in 2021, will be held in 2022. This was announced today by the La Biennale Foundation. One-year postponement also for the Architecture Biennale, which was scheduled to take place this year, from Aug. 29 to Nov. 29. The new dates: for the 17th International Architecture Exhibition(How will we live together? curated by Hashim Sarkis), May 22 to Nov. 21, 2021. The Art Biennale, curated by Cecilia Alemani (the Italian curator had been chosen at the beginning of the year), will last seven months and will be held from April 23 to November 27, 2022. The reason is the continuingcoronavirus emergency that inevitably causes all the work to slip.

The decision, the Foundation explains, “is an acknowledgement of the impossibility of proceeding (within the set time limits) in the realization of such a complex and worldwide exhibition, due to the persistence of a series of objective difficulties caused by the ongoing international health emergency.”

“The continuation of this situation to date,” the note continues, “has definitely compromised the organization of the Exhibition in its entirety, jeopardizing the realization, transportation and presence of the works and consequently the quality of the Exhibition itself. The Biennale, having also heard from the curator Hashim Sarkis, respecting the difficulties of the invited architects, countries, institutions, and participating Collateral Events, and thanking them for their efforts so far, has decided to postpone the opening of the International Architecture Exhibition to 2021, but with the original duration of six months, from May 22 to November 21.”
