During an inspection in the Leoniana Library in Pistoia, ten volumes dating from the period between the second half of the 16th century and the first decades of the 17th century had been found. The discovery had occurred a few years ago, when the head of the library had reported the presence of books that did not appear to belong to the institution, therefore assuming that these had been stolen and placed by someone inside the metal shelving.
Initial investigations conducted by the Carabinieri Tutela Patrimonio Culturale command by means of the database of illegally stolen cultural property had not yielded any results. Subsequently, dwelling on the presence of abrasions on the volumes and their significant quality, the Carabinieri deepened their search with positive results: they had identified to whom the valuable goods belonged.
They were the property of the Episcopal Seminary of Massa Marittima.
Now the volumes have been returned to the institution and to Don Filippo Balducci, rector of the seminary, and a report has been formalized of the theft committed at an unspecified date.
It is estimated that the value of the recovered volumes amounts to about 30,000 euros.
