Teatro alla Scala raises funds to support La Fenice Theater in Venice

The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, announced on his official Facebook page that the Teatro alla Scala will raise funds for the La Fenice Theater in Venice, which was heavily damaged by the tide that hit the lagoon between Nov. 12 and 13 and was forced to suspend performances temporarily.

On Friday, Nov. 29, the Teatro alla Scala will raise the curtain for an extraordinary performance of the ballet triptych with Ravel’s Boléro, and the funds raised will go to the Teatro La Fenice, which suffered heavy damage from high water and has temporarily suspended its activities. We have agreed this with Superintendent Alexander Pereira at the proposal of the La Scala workers’ unions. An initiative that makes me proud, a concrete testimony of solidarity with the city. Milan has always been close to municipalities in difficulty and does so once again with a concrete and tangible act."

Superintendent and artistic director of Teatro La Fenice, Fortunato Ortombina, said in a post that appeared on the official page of the famous Venetian theater, “Superintendent Pereira called me personally to give me this news. I thank, touched, him, Mayor Sala and the whole Teatro alla Scala.”

The Teatro La Fenice was founded in 1792, on the occasion of the Feast of the Sensa, the union of Venice with its sea, and was been the site, throughout the 19th century, of numerous world premieres of works by composers such as Gioachino Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini, Gaetano Donizetti and Giuseppe Verdi, while the 20th century has seen world premieres of works by Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten, Sergei Prokofiev, Luigi Nono, Bruno Maderna, Mauricio Kagel, Adriano Guarnieri, Luca Mosca, and Claudio Ambrosini. It has also suffered two heavy fires, one in 1836 and the other in 1996, both followed by extraordinary reconstruction.
