Taranto, Italy’s Capital of Culture 2022 candidate, is focusing on young people and schools: the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto and the City of Taranto have signed a pact to make the city’s schools the protagonists of this mission.
“For a city, the candidacy for the title of Capital of Culture is not only a monument or a millennial trait, but it is also the spirit of the men and women of the future who will have the awareness, the care, the passion, the commitment, the love for that land and that heritage that they will want to hand down, to improve, to share, to make thrive. That’s what culture is for, too!” say National Archaeological Museum director Eva Degl’Innocenti and Taranto City Councilor for Education Debora Cinquepalmi.
“Educating young people about culture,” they emphasize, “making them become protagonists of a path of active citizenship, and showing, in an incontrovertible way, the many faces of Taranto students who hope for a future in their own land, and who design, study, and achieve important results here. It is also a way to stand beside all educational institutions and their pedagogical, cultural and social commitment in one of the most difficult periods on the planet, thus also sealing a new pact with the world of education in which we are all called to believe.”
They sent a letter to all school principals in Taranto, inviting them along with their teachers to make the most of the opportunities offered by the Taranto museum’s new digital course: the 3D Virtual Tour within the MArTA exhibition halls and, for the older ones, continuing education through virtual attendance at seminar spaces such as the one on Jan. 13 that will highlight the historical approach of science and men in past pandemics.
“In the coming days we will come back to solicit school leaders,” concludes Councillor Cinquepalmi, “in order to build together with them a real plan for the digital use of the museum, waiting for it to return to being what we all consider it to be, that is, the stargate that will lead Taranto from the past into the future.”
