The Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) unveiled the Casa-Studio Leonora Carrington project on April 6, 2021, to mark the 104th anniversary of the birth of Leonora Carrington, among the most significant artists of Surrealism.
The home-studio where the artist lived and worked in the heart of Mexico City ’s Roma neighborhood from 1948 until her death in 2011 is now open to the public, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic only virtually by accessing the project website https://casaleonoracarrington.uam.mx/. However, project director Alejandra Osoria hopes to open to in-person visits with real guided tours as soon as possible, perhaps by the end of the year.
For now, it is possible to take a 360-degree virtual tour inside the rooms of the building, looking at objects and sculptures on display, to learn about and get closer to Carrington’s life and work. The building was purchased by the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in June 2017 from Pablo Weisz Carrington, Leonora’s son, through a contract granting the University all the objects and furnishings. This was the starting point of the project that included the renovation and architectural rehabilitation of the building, and during the pandemic, more than 8600 pieces and documents were catalogued that testify to the artist’s life and work here for more than sixty years. The building is on three levels and the most significant spaces are the kitchen, studio and Leonora’s bedroom, but there are many other accessible spaces.
The Leonora Carrington house-studio intends to be a space for academic reflection, promoting various issues on memory, archives, cultural preservation, architecture, museography, collections, heritage, outreach, literature, painting, visual arts, surrealism, gender studies, and more.
The website has been created following a design as close to Carrington’s art as possible: for the time being, it is the only mezzzo through which one can enter the house-studio, but then it will serve as an introduction to what visitors will be able to physically admire inside the building.
A Digital Documentation Center is being built to house the archive, accessible to researchers and students both inside and outside the university.
