In Rome, on a wall in Viale Regina Elena, street artist Laika has created her new work: titled Wall of Shame, it is a collage of comments taken from various social media and websites supplemented by the first and last names of the authors.
"I collected dozens of comments, posted on news pages and discussion groups, that ooze with the most boorish and repugnant racism. There are people who rejoice over deaths at sea, people who spew hatred towards Italian girls and boys who have foreign parents, those who praise violence for defending the nation against a supposed invasion, those who even manage to lash out at children who go to school," the artist commented.
"I wanted to put on paper and wall the worst part of the country, even if it is but a drop of the sea of racism and ignorance that exists in Italy," he added.
"What I put on paper is a form of discrimination that is absolutely evident to everyone, but it is not the only one, on the contrary. There are many others and much more insidious ones, against which it is important that we are committed, both as a civil society and as individuals [...] Those who believe that they are superior to someone else just because, in a completely random way, they were born in one place instead of another and have white skin, have nothing human about them," he concluded.
