Street art: in Milan, the Simpsons in an African-American version in homage to George Floyd

A new piece of street art appeared in Milan last night: Just Because I am Black, in homage to George Floyd.

Just Because I am Black is the new mural that has appeared in Corso Buenos Aires and Via Torino in Milan: created by street artist AleXsandro Palombo, it depicts the full Simpsons in an African-American version in the company of a hooded version of the Statue of Liberty and their son Bart who is repeatedly writing the phrase"Who is next?" on the usual chalkboard.

The artwork that appeared last night was accompanied by another image, in which Bart, holding a paintbrush and bucket on which the words Black Lives Matter appear, attaches a poster depicting George Floyd, the forty-six-year-old African American killed during a police stop last May 25 in Minneapolis. Underneath, the words “I get oppressed - I have to fear the police. I was taught to make myself less threatening I get labeled suspect - People think I am a threat.”

The street art work is intended to be a tribute to George Floyd himself.

“The racial problem is always the same, it’s been there rooted for centuries,” Palombo commented. “It is a cultural and transversal problem that spreads with the virus of stereotyping, prejudice and ignorance. It is everyone’s problem because it does not affect just one ethnic group, and there will be no end to it until governments take the right measures to prevent and prosecute racist violence with strong laws. Only if strong policies involving the entire educational system are implemented can the spread of racial discrimination be countered in future generations. The most effective vaccine remains education for human rights, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.”
