Sotheby's, Della Robbia's Madonna della Fiora sold for more than $2 million

Luca della Robbia's Madonna della Fiora sold for more than $2 million at Sotheby's.

In addition to Sandro Botticelli’s master piece, which fetched a record sum of more than $92 million, the so-called Madonna della Fiora, a masterpiece by Luca della Robbia, was sold at auction at Sotheby ’s in New York. Estimated at between $700,000 and $1 million, the work sold today for $2,016,500.

The marvelous glazed terracotta had been the protagonist of a heartfelt appeal by the Municipality of Santa Fiora itself addressed to patrons, Foundations, Banking Institutions, the Region and MiBACT aimed at acquiring this masterpiece and bringing it back to its territory of origin, since the collection of Robbia ceramics in Santa Fiora is one of the most significant in the world.

Owned by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the identity of the new owner who purchased it at such a high figure is not yet known. It depicts the Madonna and Child (both figures are white) on a turquoise background; the frame is enameled in white, blue stripes and discs in imitation of precious marble inlay.
