A special visit to the Santa Maria della Scala complex in Siena for a group of seniors from the province of Gorizia who were able to spend an hour among the halls of the Siena museum... without ever moving from the province of Gorizia. Last February 25, in fact, the group was able to discover the treasures of the museum complex thanks to the technology of theAvatar, theremote-controlled robotic alter ego that allows people with severe motor disabilities to access the exhibition spaces and museum collections.
The remote guided tour was made possible through a collaboration between the Antico Ospedale Santa Maria della Scala Foundation and S.O.F.I.A (Supporting Every Family In Autonomy) an innovative start-up based in the province of Gorizia that stands by families in need of support, so that they can enable their members in a difficult or fragile state (elderly people, people with dementia and other degenerative diseases, people with disabilities and anyone who needs support) to be able to stay in their homes for as long as possible.
Braincontrol Avatar is a unique service for access to any space (exhibition, school, museum) dedicated in particular to people with motor difficulties who can thus autonomously guide a robotic alter ego directly from home, developed by the Siena-based company Liquidweb. Connecting remotely, the system allows visitors to move around the museum, adjust audio, video and height of field of view independently, and admire objects up close, read captions and interact.
Free guided tours with Avatar take place two days a week, on Tuesdays (Pellegrinaio) and Thursdays (Collezione Piccolomini Spannocchi) in shifts lasting about an hour, which can be booked on the museum’s website www.santamariadellascala.com
