Sicily, the process for the acquisition of Casa Quasimodo by the region kicks off

The Sicilian Region has initiated procedures for the acquisition of the house where poet Salvatore Quasimodo was born in Modica.

The Sicilian Region has given the go-ahead to procedures for the acquisition of Salvatore Quasimodo ’s birth house in Modica, in the province of Ragusa. The go-ahead came with a resolution of the Musumeci government, approved at the last council meeting, after an estimate by the regional Technical department quantified the value of the property at about 220,000 euros.

Last March , the regional council had allocated a total of 1 million euros for the purchase and development of the famous poet’s home.

“Quasimodo’s home is one of the many places in Modica that attract the attention and curiosity of tourists and schoolchildren. We feel it is our duty, therefore, to follow up on the commitment we had made, together with the Department of Cultural Heritage, to transform the property into a cultural tourism hub,” said Sicilian Regional President Nello Musumeci.

Salvatore Quasimodo was born Aug. 20, 1901, in Modica and spent his early years here, maintaining close ties with the places of his childhood. The building is located in the historic center, a short distance from the church of San Giorgio: its interior contains the original study and other objects that belonged to the poet, which were acquired in 1992 by the Region and then given to the municipality. The house also includes a 650-square-meter garden.

"Quasimodo’s home represents a prestigious piece of the network of House Museums wanted by the Musumeci government and also the right recognition to the Modican poet and Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1959, among the highest representatives of Italian culture," said Regional Councillor for Cultural Heritage Alberto Samonà.
