September sees the 77th Venice Film Festival. Fewer films but more novelties

The Venice Film Festival, now in its 77th edition, will take place, but with some changes. Scheduled for September 2-12, 2020, the overall number of films in the official selection will be reduced. The Venezia 77 and Orizzonti competitive sections are expected to be confirmed and will be held in the usual manner and size, such as the Fuori Concorso section and the Biennale College Cinema. The screenings will be held in the halls traditionally set up on the Lido, with the adoption of all health and safety measures established by the competent authorities on the date of the event. The Venezia Virtual Reality competition, on the other hand, instead of on the island of Lazzaretto Vecchio, will be entirely visible online, thanks to a dedicated innovative platform, accessible to all accredited, in collaboration with VRChat and HTC Vive Pro.

As for the Venice Classics section, it will be hosted within the program of the Il Cinema Ritrovato festival, promoted by the Cineteca di Bologna, which will take place in the Emilian city from August 25 to 31. The selection of restored Classics, enriched with additional titles, will then be replicated in Venice in the following months.
On the other hand, the Sconfini section will not be held this year, in order to guarantee the greatest number of seats available for the replicas of the films in the confirmed main sections.

However, two outdoor arenas will also be available, one at the Giardini della Biennale and one at the Lido skating rink. Most of the films in the official program will be replicated at the Rossini Cinemas in Venice and the Candiani Cultural Center in Mestre, as part of the Esterno Notte program organized by the Venice City Council’s Cinema Circuit.

Artistic director Alberto Barbera said, "I am extremely pleased that the Biennale Cinema can be held with a minimal reduction in titles and sections. The official selection of Venice 77, with its 50-55 films from all over the world, will offer the usual overview of the best the film industry has produced in recent months, thanks to the extraordinary response that directors and producers have been able to give, even in the difficult working conditions of the last few months. A large presence of filmmakers and actors will accompany the films to the Lido, while internet connections will allow for press conferences for all those who are unable to attend in person, as a result of the travel restrictions still in place."
