Established in Sicily is the Segesta Archaeological Park, an entity that will enjoy its own scientific and research, administrative and financial autonomy.
Since the 2000 regional law providing for the establishment of archaeological parks in Sicily, three have been created: Agrigento, Naxos-Taormina and Selinunte-Cave di Cusa. The next planned will be Pantelleria, but sixteen more are planned.
The intent is to lead to a growth in both quality of services and tourist appeal of archaeological areas that need autonomous administration in terms of protection.
Sicilian Regional President Nello Mosumeci said, “The new management of cultural heritage begins here. Only three parks in eighteen years represent one of the paradoxes of our Region, which has not implemented a good law that many envy us. The Segesta Archaeological Park, with its theater and temple is one of the symbols of Sicily in the world. The heritage of our island deserves to be enhanced and returned to the Sicilians. The full implementation of the law will allow us to catch up with the most modern forms of valorization and management of cultural heritage.”
Cultural Heritage Councillor Sebastiano Tusa added, “Sicily must have all the Parks planned and in a short time. It is a commitment that I feel I must honor in the conviction that the rebirth of Sicily’s Cultural Heritage can only pass through a modern and streamlined management system.”
