Vandalized works of BIAS - International Biennial of Contemporary Sacred Art: seven sculptures from the eighth stage of the event held in Porto Rotondo, Sardinia, installed in an exhibition route along the village were violently destroyed, beheaded and some looted.
In total, there were 20 sculptures temporarily placed for BIAS, and of these, seven made by five artists were brutally vandalized over the course of the nights. Specifically targeted were works by the duo Alvitiart, Rosa Mundi, Margherita Grasselli and Camilla Ancilotto, contemporary installations placed between Cascella Square, Ceroli Square and the old dock.
Alvitiart’s statue was first destroyed a foot, then in the following nights decapitated, while Rosa Mundi’s was looted (only the outer frame remained).
“Hit by the fury of ignorance and the most vicious violence,” commented the event organizers and artists. More than 200,000 euros of damage is counted and a complaint has already been lodged with law enforcement.
The Donà dalle Rose Foundation, which is responsible for the project, has announced that it will support the restoration of the damaged works. “Despite the seriousness of what happened,” the Foundation commented, “BIAS will not stop in the face of the incivility of a group of vandals. Action will be taken, and through the help of both law enforcement and those who wish to help us with any reports, we are confident that the culprits will be traced and this sad episode will soon be closed.”
