Accidentally discovered in Scotland, near Peebles, aBronze Age treasure, only with the help of a metal detector. The find was made by Mariusz Stepien, who, thanks to this tool, discovered a collection of objects dating as far back as 900 BC. Authorities called it a discovery of national significance.
Among the objects unearthed were a sword still in its scabbard dating from 1000-900 B.C., all decorated with figures in the shape of chariot wheel axles, and a metal pendant that when hung froma horse’s harness allegedly made a scrap metal noise. The latter is the first such object to be discovered in Scotland and the third in the United Kingdom: it has been preserved in excellent condition, among other things. Leather and wood were preserved under the ground.
The man detected the signal from the metal detector and immediately reported it to the Treasure Trove association. “From the beginning I felt it could be something exceptional and I had discovered a significant part of Scottish history. I am happy that the land has revealed to me something that has been hidden for over 3,000 years,” he commented.
The archaeologists spent about twenty days at the find site and Stepien also wanted to witness the extraction, so he camped at the site with the archaeologists “I wanted to be part of the extraction from start to finish. Every day new objects were being discovered and with that new information.”
Emily Freeman, head of Treasure Trove, which directed the excavation, said,"This is an important discovery for Scotland. Very few Bronze Age remains have been found in Scotland. This is an exceptional opportunity to find not only these remains, but also organic matter. We need to examine these objects and understand why they were deposited there."
