In Tortolì, Sardinia, art pays tribute to Michele Scarponi, the cyclist who tragically died last Saturday in a car accident in Filottrano, in the province of Ancona. Local muralist Franco Mascia, who at the suggestion of the councilor for culture was already creating a mural dedicated to the Giro d’Italia in the schools’ square (the pink race, this year, will pass through the town of Ogliastra), decided to add to his work the figure of Michele Scarponi, who stands on an open door to the sky in the company of Frankie, the parrot friend who accompanied him in many training sessions. The cyclist from the Marche region would participate in the Giro as captain of Astana.
The town of Tortolì and, in general, the Ogliastra region, are famous for their murals, widespread manifestations of folk art that decorate many walls of buildings in towns and villages, with themes often with a social background, or evoking customs and traditions of this area of Sardinia.
