A project to restore the Fort of Santa Tecla, an ancient seaside fortification that will become an exhibition venue, was presented in San Remo.

New projects for the completion and rehabilitation of Fort Santa Tecla, funded by the Ministry of Culture, were presented yesterday in San Remo . Regional director Alessandra Guerrini and Fort director Alberto Parodi illustrated the projects. Mayor Alberto Biancheri and Culture Councillor Silvana Ormea were also present.

Thanks to a new funding of three million euros from the MiC (which is in addition to the three million already used for the restoration of the ground floor and terraces) it will be possible to start new interventions on the Fort, which will be divided into two lots: the first relating to the restoration of the facades, the second to the arrangement of the external areas. The project was illustrated by architects Salvatore Simonetti and Francesca Pavani of Studio Simonetti Architettura in Turin, which specializes in the restoration of historic buildings.

The facades will be the subject of a delicate restoration project aimed at consolidating and preserving the brick and stone wall face without, however, harming the Fort’s now-historicized appearance. Broadly speaking, the removal of weedy vegetation, consolidation of materials and removal of inappropriate materials will be carried out.

More complex is the second lot dedicated to the arrangement of the external areas. The Regional Directorate Museums of Liguria, in synergy with the City of San Remo, has in fact requested professionals to intervene on the main front of the Fort where the accumulation of earth over the years is causing infiltration inside the ground floor in addition to having compromised the original design of the facade, which is now partly buried. Not secondary is the need to finally make the main entrance to the Fort accessible also by the disabled.

These indications gave rise to the project, which envisages the liberation of the front of the Fort from the landfill by creating a stepped arrangement, with ramps, and large green areas that will allow a new and more correct perception of the Fort and its relationship with the city. The overall design was inspired by the design of the former ramparts, built in the mid-eighteenth century together with the Fort and then demolished during the nineteenth century. The areas thus recovered, which will be restored to the same elevation as the inner courtyard of the Fort, can also be used for temporary exhibitions and a place to meet and rest, becoming a kind of hinge between the interior of the Fort and San Remo. Already in the course of 2023, as soon as the project receives authorization from the Superintendence (with whom the process of sharing the project has already started from the preliminary stages), it will be possible to proceed with the tenders for the awarding of the works.
