Salento, Poetry Cave closes: too delicate for tourist assault

In Melendugno, Salento, the municipality has decided to close access to the Grotta della Poesia, the wonderful natural pool in the archaeological area of Roca Vecchia. The area is in fact extremely delicate and a massive influx of tourists could cause the cliff to collapse. The mayor of Melendugno, Marco Potì, pointed out that it is “a particularly delicate and valuable area, since it is rich in history,” and then stated that the administration took the decision to intervene urgently “to delimit a part of the Grotto and avoid that there would be an excessive concentration of people in the most fragile points, which are those of the archway that connects the pool with the open sea, which has a very limited thickness.”

The decision, the mayor explains, is temporary in nature: however, it is essential to ensure the integrity of the place. Following the ban, Potì concludes, a next, larger intervention will follow, “jointly with the authorities in charge, the Superintendence and with the involvement of the community of Roca, to limit and control the influx in this area so that there is a more controlled and conscious fruition. We hope in the understanding of the tourists to whom we wish a good continuation of their vacations in the marinas of Melendugno.”
