The Region of Liguria has allocated 30 thousand euros for the restoration of the Circumcision of Christ, a masterpiece by Rubens on the high altar of the Gesù Church in Genoa.

Pieter Paul Rubens ’ masterpiece from the Church of Jesus in Genoa, depicting the Circumcision of Christ, will be restored: in fact, the Region of Liguria has allocated 30 thousand euros for the work. The resources will make it possible to carry out a conservative intervention that will ensure its full state of health and greater enjoyment of the work.

Placed on thehigh altar between two large black marble columns specially transported in 1605 from the Framura quarry, the monumental work was executed in the same year by the famous artist. It was one of the richest families of Ganovese, the Pallavicino, who invited the painter to depict the moment of circumcision.

“This is an extraordinary intervention to safeguard an exceptional asset,” says Region of Liguria President and Councillor for Culture Giovanni Toti. "Coinciding with the events and happenings planned for the great Superbarocco exhibition held in Rome at the Scuderie del Quirinale in synergy with Genoa and the one now underway at Palazzo Ducale until January 22, 2023 on Rubens in Genoa, Regione Liguria decided to promote the restoration of this particularly significant work within the Ligurian artistic heritage, usable by the entire community. The risk was that we could lose one of the masterpieces of the European Baroque that marks the beginning of a new artistic era, precisely in Genoa, in 1605."

The same church houses another masterpiece by Rubens: in fact, in 1620 he was commissioned to depict the Miracle of Blessed Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order.
