A visitor to the Royal Palace of Caserta was walking through the entrance door to the Hall of Battles, in the 19th-century wing, when he noticed, by stepping on it, that a floor tile was wobbling. After a few seconds, he went back to the spot of the wobbly tile, bent down, removed it and then placed it, hiding it in a yellow envelope and then continued his visit with the “souvenir.”
It happened on March 16, 2023, and surveillance cameras captured the entire scene of the theft.
The coordinator of the museum’s security service, in making his rounds at the time of the Reggia’s closure, noticed the missing piece of floor and immediately notified Director Tiziana Maffei, who informed the Carabinieri of the Caserta Company. The latter acquired video surveillance images and thus traced the identity of the visitor. He is a 42-year-old man from Castel Volturno.
Subjected to a house search, the valuable tile was found and returned to the museum. The man was charged and will now have to answer for the crime of theft of cultural property.
