This weekend’s bad weather has caused serious damage to the Royal Palace of Caserta: a Cupressus Macrocarpa (Monterey cypress), which represented one of the first cypress trees of this species planted in the Palace grounds between 1873 and 1876, has fallen. Technicians are currently working to figure out what caused the large plant to fail. The cypress tree had undergone some maintenance work in the past that had not revealed any worrisome situations.
As a precaution, the Reggia’s English Garden (where the tree fell) will be closed to the public until Dec. 26, and at the same time some areas of the park may be closed to allow technicians’ investigations. The English Garden kept four specimens of the Cupressus Macrocarpa species. In addition to the large, centuries-old tree, wind and rain also caused other, less imposing trees near the Big Fishpond, on the east side of the park and in the English Garden to cvade.
“The Direction of the Royal Palace of Caserta,” Director Tiziana Maffei said in a note, “following the violent atmospheric events that have plagued the Campania region in recent days, has ordered a series of checks aimed at ascertaining the conditions in the Park and the English Garden. The rain and strong gusts of wind caused, in fact, the fall and damage of several trees in the Old Woods, particularly near the Peschiera Grande, on the east side of the Park and in the English Garden.”
